Carl Wernicke

Carl Wernicke (1848–1905) was a German neurologist whose work linked damage to the left posterior temporal region with impaired language comprehension and fluent but often nonsensical speech.

Wernicke's aphasia: A language disorder marked by impaired comprehension and fluent speech that may lack meaningful content. The syndrome most directly associated with Wernicke’s account of posterior temporal damage.
Language comprehension: The process of deriving meaning from spoken, written, or signed language. This capacity is especially impaired in the syndrome associated with Wernicke.
Aphasia research: The scientific study of acquired language disorders and their relation to brain function. Wernicke’s work became a landmark in the emerging clinical study of aphasia.
Broca's aphasia: A nonfluent aphasia characterized by effortful speech, often with relatively better comprehension than production. Its halting speech contrasts with the fluent output typical of Wernicke’s aphasia.

Arcuate fasciculus: A white-matter pathway connecting temporal and frontal language-related regions. Its role in connecting language regions helped inspire models beyond a single comprehension center.
