Carlo Goldoni

Carlo Goldoni (1707–1793) was an Italian playwright and librettist whose comedies shifted Italian theatre from improvisational commedia dell’arte toward scripted, character-centered drama.

Commedia dell’arte: An Italian theatrical tradition built around masked stock characters, improvised dialogue, and recurring comic plots. Goldoni inherited its masks and performers while replacing much of its improvisation with written dialogue.
