Knowra Carlo Gozzi Carlo Gozzi Carlo Gozzi (1720–1806) was a Venetian playwright and writer whose fairy-tale dramas revived commedia dell’arte traditions and opposed theatrical realism.
Commedia dell’arte : An Italian theatrical tradition built around masked character types, improvised dialogue, and recurring comic plots. Gozzi adapted its masks and improvisational energy for literary fairy-tale plays.
Carlo Goldoni : An Italian playwright who reformed comedy by replacing improvised scenarios with scripted, socially observant drama. Goldoni’s reforms were Gozzi’s principal target in their celebrated theatrical rivalry.
The Love for Three Oranges : A comic fairy-tale play by Gozzi, first performed in Venice in 1761. This early fiaba launched Gozzi’s series of fantastic plays against Goldoni’s reforms.
