Knowra Carlo Maderno Carlo Maderno Carlo Maderno (1556–1629) was an Italian architect whose work helped establish Baroque architecture in Rome. His major projects include the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica and the church of Santa Susanna.
St. Peter’s Basilica : A Renaissance and Baroque church in Vatican City, built over the traditional burial place of Saint Peter. Maderno extended its nave and designed the monumental façade completed in 1612.
Baroque architecture : A European architectural style marked by dramatic movement, spatial complexity, and richly staged visual effects. Maderno’s Roman churches helped define its early architectural language.
Ticino : A Swiss canton in the Italian-speaking southern Alps, historically linked to northern Italian artistic networks. Maderno was born in the region before building his career in Rome.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini : An Italian sculptor, architect, and painter who became a leading artist of the Roman Baroque. Bernini succeeded Maderno as architect of St. Peter’s and continued work at Palazzo Barberini.
