Carlo Rubbia

Carlo Rubbia is an Italian particle physicist who shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics for work leading to the discovery of the W and Z bosons.

Simon van der Meer: Dutch physicist who developed stochastic cooling and shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics with Carlo Rubbia. His cooling technique made the intense antiproton beams central to Rubbia’s discovery program possible.
CERN Proton Synchrotron: A CERN accelerator that boosts protons to high energies and supplies beams to experiments and other machines. It produced the protons used to generate antiprotons for the collider.
W boson: An electrically charged elementary particle that mediates the weak interaction. Its production and decay provided one of the two landmark signals found by UA1 and UA2.
Large Hadron Collider: A CERN ring collider that brings protons or heavy ions into collision at very high energies. Unlike Rubbia’s antiproton method, its principal operation collides two proton beams.
UA1 experiment: A CERN detector experiment that discovered the W and Z bosons in 1983. Rubbia led this collaboration, which supplied the decisive collider evidence.
Antiproton Accumulator: A CERN storage ring that accumulated and cooled antiprotons for use in the Super Proton Synchrotron collider. It concentrated the scarce antiprotons needed for repeated collisions.
Z boson: An electrically neutral elementary particle that mediates the weak interaction. Its observation completed the experimental discovery of the weak force’s heavy carriers.
Tevatron: A Fermilab accelerator that collided protons with antiprotons and reached higher collision energies than the SPS collider. It extended the proton–antiproton approach after the CERN discovery.
UA2 experiment: A CERN experiment that independently observed the W and Z bosons in proton–antiproton collisions. Its independent results corroborated the discoveries made by Rubbia’s UA1 collaboration.
Stochastic cooling: A method that reduces the spread of particle-beam momenta and positions using measured signals and feedback. Van der Meer’s method made antiproton accumulation practical at the required intensity.
