Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico protects Carlsbad Cavern and more than 100 other caves in the Guadalupe Mountains. Its caves formed chiefly through sulfuric-acid dissolution of limestone.

Carlsbad Cavern: A large cave in New Mexico known for its extensive chambers, including the Big Room. This is the park’s best-known cave and contains its signature underground chambers.
Big Room: A vast chamber in Carlsbad Cavern, among the largest underground chambers in North America. It is the cavern’s most expansive and iconic space.
Jim White: A cave explorer and rancher associated with early exploration and promotion of Carlsbad Cavern. His explorations helped bring the cavern to public and scientific attention.
Mexican free-tailed bat: A migratory bat species that forms large colonies in caves across the Americas. A large colony roosts in Carlsbad Cavern and drives the park’s bat-flight spectacle.
Sulfuric acid speleogenesis: Cave formation through dissolution of rock by sulfuric acid, often generated when hydrogen sulfide meets oxygenated groundwater. This process created much of the park’s extensive cave system.
King's Palace: A decorated series of chambers along the developed tour route in Carlsbad Cavern. Its formations make it a notable example of the cavern’s decorated upper passages.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park Act: The 1930 United States law that established Carlsbad Caverns National Park. This act transformed federal protection of the caves into national park status.
Cave conservation: The protection of cave environments, formations, and organisms from damage or disruption. Park rules and management aim to preserve fragile cave features and habitats.
Capitan Reef: A Permian fossil reef in the Guadalupe Mountains, now exposed as limestone and dolostone. The reef’s ancient carbonate rocks provide the geological framework for the caves.
