Knowra Carlsbad Caverns Carlsbad Caverns Carlsbad Caverns is a cave system in southeastern New Mexico, formed in Permian limestone of the Capitan reef. Its large chambers and mineral formations developed through sulfuric-acid dissolution and later deposition of calcite.
Sulfuric acid speleogenesis : Cave formation by sulfuric acid produced when hydrogen sulfide reacts with oxygenated water. This process dissolved the Capitan limestone and created the caverns’ large chambers.
