Carmen Amaya

Carmen Amaya (1913–1963) was a Spanish flamenco dancer and singer renowned for her rapid, powerful footwork and performances that brought flamenco to international audiences.

Los Tarantos: A 1963 Spanish film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set among two rival Romani families in Barcelona. Amaya’s final film role made her a tragic matriarch in a flamenco-inflected adaptation.
