Carnassial

A carnassial is a specialized upper premolar paired with a lower molar that shear food in many carnivorans. Their blade-like edges act like scissors.

Carnassial pair: The upper fourth premolar and lower first molar that oppose one another to shear food in many carnivorans. These two teeth form the functional cutting unit called a carnassial.
Premolar: A tooth positioned between the canine and molar in a mammal's dentition. The upper carnassial is usually the fourth premolar.
Hypercarnivore: An animal whose diet consists predominantly of vertebrate flesh. Strongly developed carnassials often accompany heavy reliance on meat.
Herbivore dentition: Tooth arrangements adapted mainly for processing plant material. Broad grinding surfaces contrast with the carnassial pair's blade-like shearing edges.
Occlusion (dentistry): The contact relationship between opposing teeth when the jaws close. Precise upper–lower tooth contact lets carnassials cut efficiently.
Molar: A posterior cheek tooth used to process food by cutting or grinding. The lower carnassial is usually the first molar.
Mesocarnivore: An animal with a diet combining substantial meat with other foods. Intermediate tooth proportions can reflect a broader diet than hypercarnivory.
Omnivore dentition: A tooth arrangement suited to processing both animal and plant foods. Omnivorous teeth often balance cutting and grinding rather than specializing in shearing.
Tooth cusp: A raised point or ridge on a tooth's chewing surface. Carnassial blades develop from aligned cusps and ridges.
Heterodont dentition: A dentition containing teeth of different shapes and functions. Carnassials specialize two positions within a varied mammalian tooth row.
