Carnosauria

Carnosauria is a clade of theropod dinosaurs that includes allosauroids and close relatives. Its members ranged from medium-sized predators to some of the largest land-dwelling carnivores.

Theropoda: A major dinosaur group that includes birds and their extinct, mostly bipedal relatives. Carnosauria is nested within this broader group of mostly meat-eating dinosaurs.
Allosaurus: A large Late Jurassic theropod dinosaur known from abundant fossils in western North America. This well-studied allosauroid anchors many reconstructions of carnosaur anatomy and ecology.
Richard Owen: A British anatomist who coined the name Dinosauria in 1842. Owen’s early dinosaur framework preceded the later recognition of Carnosauria as a distinct grouping.
Spinosauroidea: A theropod group that includes spinosaurids and their close relatives. Spinosaurids were once grouped with carnosaurs in broad classifications but are usually placed elsewhere today.
Allosauroidea: A theropod clade that includes Allosaurus, carcharodontosaurids, and several related lineages. Allosauroids form the best-known core of Carnosauria in modern classifications.
Giganotosaurus: A giant carcharodontosaurid theropod from the Late Cretaceous of Argentina. Its enormous size illustrates the largest-bodied predators within the broader carnosaur radiation.
Friedrich von Huene: A German paleontologist who made influential studies of fossil reptiles and dinosaurs. His early twentieth-century classifications helped shape the historical use of Carnosauria.
Tyrannosauroidea: A theropod lineage that includes tyrannosaurs and their close relatives. Tyrannosaurs were historically called carnosaurs, but current phylogenies place them among coelurosaurs.
Tetanurae: A theropod clade that includes birds and most non-coelophysoid theropods. Carnosauria is commonly placed among tetanurans, alongside its rival clade Coelurosauria.
Carcharodontosaurus: A large carcharodontosaurid theropod known from fossils in North Africa. Its fossils document a major African branch of Carnosauria during the Cretaceous.
