Carolus Clusius

Carolus Clusius (1526–1609) was a Flemish botanist and physician who helped establish botany as an independent discipline and introduced plants such as the tulip and potato to European cultivation.

Tulipomania: A speculative boom in tulip-bulb trading in the Dutch Republic during the 1630s. Clusius helped popularize tulips in Europe; the later market frenzy grew from their horticultural appeal.
Renaissance botany: The study of plants in Europe during the Renaissance, shaped by classical texts, observation, and print. Clusius helped move plant study beyond inherited texts toward detailed observation and comparison.
Tulip: A spring-flowering bulbous plant in the genus Tulipa, native to parts of Eurasia. Clusius cultivated tulips at Leiden and helped establish the plant in northern European gardens.
Montpellier Faculty of Medicine: A historic medical faculty at the University of Montpellier in southern France. Clusius studied medicine at Montpellier, where his interest in plants developed alongside his medical training.
Leiden University: A Dutch university founded in 1575, known for its early botanical garden and medical teaching. Clusius became its prefect of the botanical garden in 1593, shaping its collections and teaching.
Herbarium: A collection of preserved, labeled plant specimens used for research and reference. Preserved specimens complemented Clusius’s descriptions and enabled plants to be compared beyond gardens.
Potato: A starchy tuber crop native to the Andes and now grown worldwide. His observations are among the early records of the potato in European botanical literature.
Guillaume Rondelet: A French physician and naturalist known for his studies of aquatic animals and teaching at Montpellier. Rondelet taught Clusius at Montpellier and modeled close observation of natural specimens.
Hortus Botanicus Leiden: A botanical garden in Leiden founded in 1590, among the oldest in the Netherlands. Clusius directed this garden from 1593 and developed it as a center for studying living plants.
Botanical illustration: The visual depiction of plants made to communicate their form and distinguishing features. Images in Clusius’s publications helped identify plants that readers could not examine alive.
