Carpel

A carpel is a flower’s ovule-bearing reproductive structure, typically composed of a stigma, style, and ovary. One or more carpels form the gynoecium.

Stigma: The receptive tip of a carpel where pollen lands and often germinates. It captures pollen at the upper end of the carpel.
Pollination: The transfer of pollen to a receptive part of a flower or, in some plants, a cone. Pollen must reach the stigma before fertilization can proceed.
Flower: The reproductive structure of flowering plants, typically bearing organs that produce gametes and attract pollinators. Carpels are one of the flower’s central reproductive organ types.
Apocarpous gynoecium: A gynoecium in which the carpels remain separate from one another. Each free carpel retains a distinct ovary and reproductive pathway.
Style: The stalk or narrow region connecting a stigma to an ovary. It links the pollen-receiving stigma to the ovary below.
Pollen tube: A tubular outgrowth of a pollen grain that carries sperm cells toward an ovule. It grows through carpel tissue toward an ovule.
Angiosperm: A flowering plant whose seeds develop within an ovary that commonly becomes a fruit. Carpels are a defining feature of flowering-plant reproduction.
Syncarpous gynoecium: A gynoecium in which two or more carpels are fused together. Carpel fusion creates a shared ovary or joined reproductive structure.
Ovary (botany): The basal part of a carpel that contains one or more ovules. It encloses the ovules that can develop into seeds after fertilization.
Double fertilization: A process in flowering plants in which two sperm cells fertilize the egg and central cell. It occurs after pollen travels through the carpel to the ovule.
