Carthaginian navy

Carthage’s fleet and naval institutions protected its commerce and projected power across the western Mediterranean, especially during its conflicts with Rome.

Quinquereme: An ancient warship classified by the arrangement of five rowers or rowing units at each vertical section of oars. This was the principal heavy warship associated with Carthaginian fleets during the Punic Wars.
Battle of the Aegates Islands: A naval battle in 241 BCE in which Rome defeated Carthage, ending the First Punic War. Its outcome forced Carthage to abandon Sicily and marked a decisive loss of sea power.
Phoenician civilization: An ancient seafaring civilization centered on city-states along the eastern Mediterranean coast. Carthage inherited Phoenician shipbuilding and maritime practices from its founders.

Carthage: An ancient Phoenician-founded city-state in North Africa that became a major western Mediterranean power. The navy was an institution of the Carthaginian state and served its commercial and military aims.
Second Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage from 218 to 201 BCE, fought across the western Mediterranean and beyond. After losing its fleet in the earlier war, Carthage relied chiefly on land campaigns under Hannibal.
Carthaginian fleet at Carthage: The circular inner harbor at Carthage, designed to shelter and service warships. Its protected basin and ship sheds formed the fleet’s central home port.
Battle of Mylae: A 260 BCE naval battle in which Rome won its first major victory at sea over Carthage. It demonstrated how Roman boarding tactics could counter Carthaginian naval experience.
