Cartography

Cartography is the practice and study of designing, producing, and interpreting maps. It combines spatial data, visual choices, and conventions to represent places and relationships.

Map projection: A mathematical method for representing Earth’s curved surface on a flat map. Projection choices shape distortion in every flat map.
Map generalization: The selection and simplification of geographic features to suit a map’s scale and purpose. Generalization prevents dense data from overwhelming a map.
Babylonian World Map: An ancient clay tablet depicting a circular world centered on Babylon and surrounded by a cosmic ocean. It is an early surviving example of a map expressing a worldview.
Navigation: The planning and control of movement from one place to another. Navigation has long required maps that support route finding and orientation.
Globe: A spherical model of Earth or another celestial body. A globe avoids the flat-map problem of representing a curved surface on a plane.
Map scale: The relationship between distances on a map and corresponding distances on the ground. Scale determines which features fit and how much detail is legible.
Coordinate reference system: A framework that assigns coordinates to locations on Earth using a datum and coordinate system. It determines how locations from different datasets align.
Ptolemy: A second-century Greek-Egyptian scholar whose works shaped astronomy and geographic knowledge. His coordinate-based geography influenced European mapmaking for centuries.
Cadastral map: A map showing land parcels, boundaries, and often ownership or property identifiers. Cadastral mapping makes cartography central to land administration.
Mercator projection: A cylindrical map projection that preserves local angles while enlarging areas toward the poles. Its navigation advantage comes with dramatic area distortion.
