Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language that describes how HTML and other structured documents are presented. Its cascade combines competing declarations according to origin, importance, specificity, and order.

CSS cascade: The process that resolves competing CSS declarations using origin, importance, specificity, and source order. It determines which declaration wins when several rules target the same property.
HTML: A markup language for structuring content on the web. HTML elements provide the document structure that CSS selectors target.
CSS Grid Layout: A CSS layout system for arranging elements in rows and columns. Grid provides two-dimensional control over page and interface layouts.
Håkon Wium Lie: A Norwegian computer scientist who proposed Cascading Style Sheets in 1994. His proposal established the initial vision for styling web documents separately.
JavaScript: A programming language widely used to add behavior and interactivity to web pages. JavaScript can change document behavior, while CSS primarily controls presentation.
CSS selector: A pattern that identifies which elements in a document a CSS rule targets. Selectors determine which elements receive a rule's declarations.

Bert Bos: A Dutch computer scientist who co-designed CSS with Håkon Wium Lie. His work helped turn the early proposal into a practical language.
Sass: A style sheet language that adds features such as variables and nesting before compiling to CSS. Sass extends authoring syntax but browsers ultimately interpret CSS.
