Casimir I the Restorer

Casimir I was Duke of Poland from 1039 to 1058. He rebuilt the Piast state after rebellion and foreign invasions had fractured its political and ecclesiastical institutions.

Bezprym: A Piast prince who ruled Poland briefly in 1031–1032 after helping drive his half-brother Mieszko II from power. His seizure of power helped trigger the crisis that Casimir later had to overcome.
Ruthenia: A historical region of eastern Europe encompassing lands around Kyiv and the upper Dniester and Dnieper rivers. Casimir’s marriage to Maria Dobroniega linked his restoration to the rulers of Kyiv.
Bolesław II the Generous: Duke and later king of Poland from 1058 to 1079, and Casimir I’s son and successor. He inherited the stronger Piast duchy Casimir had reassembled.
Bolesław I the Brave: The first crowned king of Poland, who ruled from 992 to 1025 and expanded Piast power. Bolesław built an expansive kingdom; Casimir restored a reduced duchy.
Pagan reaction in Poland: An eleventh-century uprising against Christian and political authority that disrupted Piast rule in Poland. The revolt weakened the institutions Casimir worked to restore.
Yaroslav the Wise: Grand prince of Kyiv from 1019 to 1054, remembered for strengthening the state and cultivating dynastic alliances. His support and family ties helped Casimir regain a position in Poland.
Polish–Bohemian relations: The changing political and military relations between the Polish and Bohemian states. Casimir’s recovery followed Bohemian intervention and did not end rivalry over Silesia.
Mieszko II Lambert: King of Poland from 1025 to 1031, whose reign ended in dynastic defeat and loss of central authority. His political collapse contrasts with Casimir’s success in reuniting much of Poland.
Bretislaus I: Duke of Bohemia from 1034 to 1055, who invaded Poland and carried off the relics of Saint Adalbert. His invasion deepened Poland’s fragmentation before Casimir’s return.
Maria Dobroniega of Kyiv: A princess of the Kyivan Rus' who married Casimir I and became duchess of Poland. Her marriage to Casimir consolidated the Polish-Kyivan alliance.
