Cassander

Cassander was king of Macedon from 305 to 297 BCE, after gaining power amid the wars among Alexander the Great’s successors. He founded Thessalonica and restored Thebes.

Antipater: A Macedonian general who governed Greece and Macedon for Alexander the Great and later served as regent of the empire. Cassander was Antipater’s son and inherited his father’s influence in Macedon.
Regency of Macedon: The delegated government of Macedon during the minority or absence of a king. Cassander first gained authority by displacing his father’s regent, Polyperchon.
Olympias: The mother of Alexander the Great and a politically active member of the Macedonian royal family. Cassander’s forces besieged and captured her before she was killed in 316 BCE.
Thessalonica: A city in northern Greece, founded by Cassander around 315 BCE and named for his wife Thessalonike. Its foundation is Cassander’s most enduring urban legacy.
Antipater II of Macedon: A son of Cassander who briefly ruled Macedon after the death of his father. His struggle with his brother Alexander triggered a crisis in Cassander’s succession.
Wars of the Diadochi: A series of conflicts among Alexander the Great’s successors over control of his empire. Cassander’s rise and kingship unfolded within these succession wars.
Battle of Ipsus: A 301 BCE battle in which a coalition of successor rulers defeated Antigonus I Monophthalmus in Phrygia. Cassander’s forces joined the coalition whose victory removed his strongest rival.
Roxana: A Bactrian noblewoman who became Alexander the Great’s wife and mother of Alexander IV. Cassander imprisoned Roxana with her son and later ordered both killed.
Therma: An ancient settlement on the Thermaic Gulf, near the site of modern Thessalonica. Cassander’s new city incorporated Therma and neighboring settlements.
Alexander V of Macedon: A son of Cassander who became king of Macedon after his father’s death. His appeal to Pyrrhus and Demetrius helped bring foreign intervention into the succession dispute.
