Castile

Castile was a medieval kingdom in central Iberia that became a leading power in the formation of Spain. Its language, Castilian, became the basis of modern standard Spanish.

County of Castile: A medieval frontier county in northern Iberia that developed into the Kingdom of Castile. The county was Castile’s political precursor under Leónese rule.
Crown of Castile: A composite monarchy formed from the kingdoms of Castile and León, with associated territories and institutions. It was the political structure through which Castilian power expanded.
Alfonso X of Castile: A thirteenth-century Castilian king and patron of legal, historical, scientific, and literary works. His court elevated Castilian as a language of scholarship and administration.

Kingdom of Navarre: A medieval Iberian kingdom centered on Navarre, with lands on both sides of the western Pyrenees. Navarre remained a separate kingdom beside Castile despite close political entanglements.
Sancho III of Pamplona: A king of Pamplona whose lands and influence made him the dominant ruler in Iberia in the early eleventh century. His division of territories helped establish Castile as a kingdom.
Isabella I of Castile: Queen of Castile from 1474 to 1504, whose marriage to Ferdinand II of Aragon linked their monarchies. Her reign helped make Castile central to the dynastic union that shaped Spain.
