Castration anxiety

In Freudian theory, castration anxiety is an unconscious fear of losing the penis, especially a boy’s fear that it will be punishment for forbidden wishes.

Oedipus complex: In Freudian theory, a child’s unconscious desire for one parent and rivalry with the other shape psychosexual development. Freud places castration anxiety within the boy’s conflict over desire for his mother and rivalry with his father.
Sigmund Freud: Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and developed theories of unconscious mental life. Freud introduced castration anxiety as a central element of his account of psychosexual development.
Penis envy: In Freud’s theory, penis envy is a girl’s unconscious wish for a penis, linked to her perception of anatomical difference. Freud paired it with castration anxiety as a gendered counterpart, a formulation later analysts challenged.
Psychoanalysis: Psychoanalysis is a theory of unconscious mental processes and a method of treating psychological distress through dialogue. Castration anxiety became one of the theory’s explanations for childhood conflict and later symptoms.
Phallic stage: In Freud’s model, the psychosexual stage in which children focus libidinal attention on the genitals. Freud locates the emergence of castration anxiety in this stage of development.
Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality: Freud’s 1905 work outlines infantile sexuality and stages of psychosexual development. This work established the developmental framework later used to explain castration anxiety.
Karen Horney: Karen Horney was a German-American psychoanalyst who criticized Freud’s theories of female psychology. Horney rejected penis envy as a universal female response and questioned Freud’s anatomy-centered account.
Psychosexual development: In Freud’s theory, psychosexual development is a sequence of stages in which libido focuses on different bodily zones. Castration anxiety is a defining conflict in Freud’s account of the phallic stage.
Identification (psychoanalysis): In psychoanalysis, identification is the process of adopting traits or attitudes associated with another person. Freud described identification with the father as one resolution of the boy’s Oedipal conflict.
The Interpretation of Dreams: Freud’s 1899 book analyzes dreams as expressions of unconscious wishes and conflicts. Its discussion of the Oedipus story helped shape Freud’s later account of childhood conflict.
