Catalan Company

The Catalan Company was a mercenary force formed largely by Aragonese and Catalan veterans. It fought in the eastern Mediterranean in the early fourteenth century and briefly ruled the Duchy of Athens.

War of the Sicilian Vespers: A war from 1282 to 1302 in which Aragon and its allies contested Angevin rule over Sicily. The conflict left experienced Aragonese and Catalan soldiers seeking new employment.
Mercenary: A professional soldier who serves for pay rather than as a permanent member of a national army. The company’s members fought under contracts, making payment and allegiance central to its conduct.
Catalan rule in Athens: The Catalan Company’s government of the Duchy of Athens, which lasted from 1311 into the late fourteenth century. The company’s victory created a durable political settlement beyond its original mercenary contract.

Neopatras: A medieval Greek city that became the center of the Catalan-controlled Duchy of Neopatras. The company extended its rule beyond Athens into central Greece.
Knights Templar: A Catholic military order founded to protect pilgrims and defend Crusader states in the eastern Mediterranean. Its religious institution and international structure contrasted with the company’s contract-based organization.
Crown of Aragon: A composite monarchy centered on Aragon and Catalonia that expanded across the western Mediterranean. Many company veterans came from its territories, especially Catalonia and Aragon.
Duchy of Athens: A Crusader state in Greece that the Catalan Company controlled from 1311 until the late fourteenth century. The company turned military victory into rule over this territory.
