Catharism

Catharism was a medieval Christian dualist movement, strongest in southern France, whose adherents rejected the material world and Catholic Church authority.

Christian dualism: A Christian theological outlook that explains evil through two opposed principles or powers. Cathars treated the material world as the work of an evil principle opposed to the good God.
Languedoc: A historical region of southern France whose medieval culture included Occitan language and powerful local lordships. Cathar communities became especially visible across this region.
Esclarmonde of Foix: A noblewoman of the County of Foix associated with Cathar religious life in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Her patronage illustrates the ties between Cathar communities and Languedoc's aristocracy.

Endura: A reported Cathar practice of fasting to death after receiving the consolamentum. Inquisitorial accounts describe it as one possible response to the rite, though its frequency is disputed.
Fall of Montségur: The 1244 surrender of Montségur after a prolonged siege during the suppression of Catharism. The surrender became a defining episode in accounts of Cathar resistance and defeat.
