Cathode-ray tube

A cathode-ray tube is an evacuated electronic device that directs and focuses an electron beam onto a phosphorescent screen to produce images.

Electron gun: An assembly that emits and accelerates electrons into a beam. Its cathode and electrodes generate the beam that forms the image.
Thermionic emission: The release of electrons from a heated material. Many cathodes supply the electrons used to create the beam.
Television: A system for transmitting and displaying moving images and sound. Cathode-ray tubes served as television displays for much of the medium’s history.
Liquid-crystal display: A flat-panel display that controls light transmission through liquid-crystal cells. LCDs replaced CRTs in most modern screens with thinner, lighter panels.
Electron beam: A stream of electrons moving in a directed, concentrated path. The beam carries the image information to the screen.
Focusing electrode: An electrode that shapes electric fields to concentrate an electron beam. It keeps the beam narrow enough to produce a sharp spot.
Oscilloscope: An instrument that displays electrical signals as traces on a screen. Cathode-ray oscilloscopes turn changing voltages into visible beam deflections.
Plasma display: A flat-panel display whose cells emit ultraviolet light that excites phosphors. Plasma screens offered large displays without a bulky electron-beam tube.
Electrostatic deflection: Control of a charged particle’s path using an electric field. Deflection plates steer beams in some tubes, especially oscilloscopes.
Aquadag: A conductive graphite coating used inside some cathode-ray tubes. Its internal coating helps collect electrons after they reach the screen.
