Catholic Monarchs

The Catholic Monarchs were Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, whose marriage joined their dynasties and whose rule reshaped late medieval Spain.

Spanish unification: The gradual consolidation of the Iberian kingdoms under the Spanish monarchy. Their dynastic union linked Castile and Aragon, though the kingdoms retained separate laws and institutions.
Crown of Castile: A composite monarchy encompassing Castile and its associated territories in the late medieval and early modern periods. Isabella inherited its throne and governed its larger resources alongside Ferdinand.
War of the Castilian Succession: The 1475–1479 conflict over the Castilian throne between Isabella and supporters of Joanna of Castile. Isabella’s victory established her claim and made her marriage alliance politically decisive.
Isabella I of Castile: Queen of Castile from 1474 until her death in 1504. Her inheritance gave the partnership its Castilian crown and shaped its governance.
Personal union: A political arrangement in which separate states share one monarch while retaining distinct institutions. Castile and Aragon shared rulers through dynastic union but remained separate political communities.
Conquest of Granada: The 1492 campaign in which Castilian forces ended the Nasrid emirate of Granada. Its victory completed the monarchs’ conquest of the last Muslim-ruled state on the Iberian Peninsula.
Crown of Aragon: A composite monarchy comprising Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, and other Mediterranean territories. Ferdinand inherited this crown, whose institutions remained distinct from Castile’s under their shared monarchs.
Joanna of Castile: The daughter of Henry IV of Castile whose disputed legitimacy became central to the Castilian succession crisis. Her rival claim challenged Isabella’s accession and drew Portuguese support.
Ferdinand II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1479 and ruler of several other Iberian and Mediterranean territories. His Aragonese inheritance complemented Isabella’s Castilian rule without merging the crowns.
Composite monarchy: A monarchy in which one ruler governs multiple territories with distinct laws and institutions. This model better describes their realms than a unified national state.
