Cato the Younger

Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis (95–46 BCE) was a Roman politician and Stoic who resisted Julius Caesar’s rise and died by suicide after the republican forces were defeated.

Julius Caesar: Julius Caesar was a Roman general and politician whose victories and concentration of power helped end the Republic. Cato became Caesar’s most persistent senatorial opponent and refused reconciliation after Caesar’s victory.

Cicero: Cicero was a Roman orator, statesman, and writer who defended republican government. Cicero’s speeches and letters reveal both admiration for Cato and disagreement over political strategy.
