Caucasian Albania

An ancient kingdom in the eastern Caucasus, centered in what is now Azerbaijan and parts of southern Dagestan. Its shifting territory and multiethnic population shaped its political and cultural history.

Strabo: A Greek geographer and historian whose surviving work describes peoples and regions of the ancient world. His Geography preserves an early account of Albania’s territory, peoples, and neighboring states.
Arsacid dynasty of Caucasian Albania: A royal dynasty that ruled Caucasian Albania during much of late antiquity. Its kings governed Albania amid competition between Rome and Persia.
Caucasian Albanian language: An extinct language of the Northeast Caucasian family, known chiefly from inscriptions and a medieval manuscript. Its surviving texts reveal one linguistic tradition within the kingdom’s diverse population.

Sasanian Empire: A Persian empire that ruled from 224 to 651 CE and rivaled Rome and Byzantium. Sasanian power repeatedly constrained Albanian rulers and influenced their political and religious institutions.
Caucasian Albanian alphabet: A writing system used to represent the Caucasian Albanian language. The alphabet’s decipherment made the kingdom’s own inscriptions newly legible.
Arran: A medieval regional name for lands in the eastern South Caucasus, especially areas corresponding to present-day Azerbaijan. Arran became a successor political and geographic designation in much of Albania’s former territory.
Armenian historiography: The historical writing produced in Armenian, spanning late antiquity through later periods. Armenian chroniclers preserve much of the narrative evidence for Albania’s rulers and relations.
Roman–Persian Wars: A series of conflicts between the Roman and Persian empires from the first century BCE to the seventh century CE. The kingdom’s position between the empires exposed it to recurring military pressure.
