Caucasian War

A prolonged nineteenth-century conflict in which the Russian Empire conquered the North Caucasus, fighting Circassian communities and forces of the Imamate of Dagestan and Chechnya.

Imamate of the Caucasus: A nineteenth-century Islamic state in the eastern North Caucasus that resisted Russian expansion under a succession of imams. Its forces sustained organized resistance in Dagestan and Chechnya for much of the war.
Russian annexation of Georgia: The Russian Empire’s incorporation of the Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti in 1801. Securing routes to Georgia drew Russian forces deeper into the North Caucasus.
Yermolov: A Russian general and imperial administrator who commanded in the Caucasus from 1816 to 1827. His punitive campaigns and frontier policies escalated Russian pressure on mountain communities.
Muhajirism: The nineteenth-century migration of North Caucasian Muslims, especially Circassians, to Ottoman lands under pressure from Russian conquest. Russian victory drove large-scale departures that transformed the region’s population.
Shamil: A Dagestani and Chechen imam who led resistance to Russian rule from 1834 until his surrender in 1859. His leadership made the eastern resistance the war’s most durable organized campaign.
Treaty of Georgievsk: A 1783 agreement placing the eastern Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti under Russian protection. The treaty’s promise of protection preceded annexation and intensified Russia’s strategic commitment southward.
Alexander Baryatinsky: A Russian field marshal who served as viceroy of the Caucasus and directed the campaign that captured Shamil. His military strategy helped bring the eastern resistance to an end in 1859.
Circassian diaspora: Circassian communities outside their historical homeland, formed largely through nineteenth-century displacement to the Ottoman Empire. The war’s expulsions created a diaspora that remains central to Circassian identity.
Circassian genocide: The mass killing, forced displacement, and dispersal of Circassians during and after Russian conquest in the nineteenth century. The final phase of the war brought mass violence and expulsion in the western Caucasus.
Russian Empire: A Eurasian empire ruled by the Romanov dynasty from 1721 until the 1917 revolution. Imperial expansion supplied the political aims and resources behind the conquest.
