Patronage : The distribution of jobs, resources, or protection in exchange for political support. Caudillos secured loyalty by dispensing offices and favors through personal networks.
Spanish American wars of independence : The wars from 1808 to 1826 that ended Spanish rule across most of mainland Spanish America. Wartime commanders and militias provided many caudillos their first armed constituencies.
Juan Manuel de Rosas : A Buenos Aires governor who dominated Argentine politics from 1829 to 1852. Rosas combined provincial authority, patronage, and coercion in a prominent caudillo regime.
Oligarchy : Government controlled by a small group, often defined by wealth, family, or social status. Caudillo power centered on a personal leader, though it could serve elite interests.

Military dictatorship : Authoritarian rule in which military officers or institutions control the state. Caudillos often commanded armed forces, but their authority rested on personal followings rather than military institutions alone.
Federalism : A system that divides governing authority between a central government and constituent regions or states. Caudillo conflicts often turned on how much power provinces should retain against the center.
