Cefazolin

Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by disrupting cell-wall synthesis. It is used for selected bacterial infections and to prevent surgical-site infections.

Beta-lactam antibiotics: A family of antibiotics whose beta-lactam ring blocks bacterial cell-wall construction. Cefazolin belongs to this family and shares its cell-wall-targeting action.
Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis: Antibiotic administration around an operation to reduce the risk of surgical-site infection. Cefazolin is commonly selected for prophylaxis in many operations.
Cephalosporins: A class of beta-lactam antibiotics grouped into generations with differing antibacterial spectra. Cefazolin is a first-generation member of this class.
Ceftriaxone: A third-generation cephalosporin with broader activity against many Gram-negative bacteria than cefazolin. Its broader spectrum suits different infections but is not automatically preferable for prophylaxis.
Antibiotic stewardship: Practices that optimize antibiotic use to improve outcomes and limit resistance and avoidable harm. Appropriate cefazolin selection and duration reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure.
Penicillin-binding proteins: Bacterial enzymes that build and remodel peptidoglycan in the cell wall. Cefazolin binds these enzymes, stopping cross-linking of the bacterial wall.
Surgical-site infection: An infection occurring at or near an incision after an operation. Preventing these infections is a major reason cefazolin is given before surgery.
First-generation cephalosporins: Cephalosporin antibiotics with strong activity against many Gram-positive bacteria and limited Gram-negative coverage. This generation’s characteristic spectrum helps predict cefazolin’s strengths and gaps.
Cephalexin: An oral first-generation cephalosporin used for selected susceptible bacterial infections. Unlike commonly used injectable cefazolin, cephalexin is taken by mouth.
Penicillin allergy: An immune-mediated reaction to penicillin antibiotics, ranging from mild symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. Many patients with a penicillin-allergy label can still receive cefazolin after clinical assessment.
