Cell (spreadsheet)

A cell is the box at the intersection of a spreadsheet row and column. It can contain data or a formula and is addressed by its column and row.

Spreadsheet: A grid-based document for organizing, calculating, and analyzing data. A cell is the spreadsheet’s basic unit.
Formula (spreadsheet): An expression entered in a spreadsheet cell that calculates a value from constants, functions, or references. A formula is stored in a cell and can use other cells as inputs.
Data validation: Rules that restrict or guide the values users can enter into a data field. Validation can limit which entries a cell accepts.
Cell range: A group of spreadsheet cells treated together, often specified by the first and last cell references. A range contains multiple cells rather than one grid position.
Row (spreadsheet): A horizontal sequence of cells in a spreadsheet, identified by its row number. A cell occupies one position in a row.
Cell address: The coordinate identifying a cell by its column and row, such as B3. Addresses specify where formulas read or write values.
Conditional formatting: Formatting that changes automatically when cell values meet specified conditions. It makes patterns visible without changing the underlying cell values.
Spreadsheet formula bar: A spreadsheet interface field that displays or edits the selected cell’s contents. The formula bar shows a cell’s contents but is not part of the grid.
Column (spreadsheet): A vertical sequence of cells in a spreadsheet, usually identified by a letter or name. A cell also occupies one position in a column.
Relative reference: A cell reference whose position changes when a formula is copied to another location. Relative references shift according to the formula cell’s new position.
