Cell (telecommunications)

A geographic area served by a cellular radio network through a base station. Cells let networks reuse radio frequencies across separated areas while maintaining mobile coverage.

Cellular network: A mobile communications system that connects devices through radio links to a network of base stations. Cells are the geographic units that organize its radio access.
Radio propagation: The behavior of radio waves as they travel through space and interact with obstacles and surfaces. Propagation determines where a cell's signal can reach reliably.
Macrocell: A large-area cellular network cell served by a high-power base station, often mounted on a tower or rooftop. Macrocells provide broad outdoor coverage across neighborhoods or rural areas.
Wi-Fi: A family of wireless local-area networking standards that connect devices through access points. Wi-Fi access points provide local wireless service without cellular cell planning.
Base station: Radio equipment that connects mobile devices to a communications network over a wireless link. It provides radio service to the cell, often alongside neighboring cells.
Radio spectrum: The range of electromagnetic frequencies used to transmit radio signals. Cellular networks divide spectrum among cells and services.
Microcell: A relatively small cellular cell used to add coverage or capacity in a localized area. Microcells address busy streets and other places needing denser service.
Distributed antenna system: A network of spatially separated antennas connected to a shared signal source. It distributes radio coverage within a venue rather than defining independent cellular cells.
Cell site: A physical location hosting antennas and radio equipment for a mobile network. Its antennas transmit and receive signals across one or more cells.
Received signal strength indication: A measurement of the power level received by a wireless device or radio receiver. Signal strength helps characterize coverage near cell boundaries.
