Celluloid

Celluloid is an early thermoplastic made by combining cellulose nitrate with camphor. Its moldability and transparency made it useful for photographic film, combs, and other goods.

Cellulose nitrate: A highly flammable cellulose ester produced by treating cellulose with nitric acid. It forms celluloid’s polymer base and supplies the material’s pronounced flammability.
Motion picture film: A strip of photographic material used to record and project moving images. Celluloid became the standard flexible base for early cinema film.
Alexander Parkes: An English inventor who developed Parkesine, an early plastic based on cellulose nitrate. His material established a key precursor to commercial celluloid.
Film preservation: The methods and practices used to protect and maintain motion-picture film materials. Nitrate celluloid’s rapid deterioration and fire risk made preservation unusually urgent.
Camphor: A crystalline compound from plants or chemical synthesis, used as a plasticizer in celluloid. It softens cellulose nitrate so the mixture can be shaped into useful objects.
Photographic film: A light-sensitive medium that records images through chemical or physical change. Celluloid’s transparency and flexibility made it a practical film support.
Parkesine: An early cellulose-nitrate plastic developed by Alexander Parkes and publicly exhibited in 1862. It preceded celluloid but was less commercially successful and differed in formulation.
Nitrate film fire: A fire involving highly flammable cellulose-nitrate photographic film. Celluloid film could burn intensely, threatening archives, theaters, and lives.
Plasticizer: A substance added to a polymer to increase flexibility or workability. Camphor performs this broader role in celluloid’s formulation.
Celluloid comb: A comb molded from celluloid, often made to imitate tortoiseshell or ivory. It illustrates how the material replaced scarce or costly natural materials.
