Cellulose acetate

Cellulose acetate is a cellulose-derived polymer made by replacing some or all of cellulose’s hydroxyl groups with acetyl groups. Its solubility and material properties make it useful in fibers, films, coatings, and filters.

Cellulose: Cellulose is a structural polysaccharide composed of glucose units linked into long chains. It supplies the polymer backbone that acetylation modifies.
Acetate fiber: Acetate fiber is a manufactured textile fiber made primarily from cellulose acetate. It is one of the polymer’s largest uses in textiles and apparel.
Paul Schützenberger: Paul Schützenberger was a French chemist who investigated cellulose derivatives, including cellulose acetate. His nineteenth-century work helped establish cellulose acetylation as a chemical process.
Biodegradation: Biodegradation is the breakdown of substances by the activity of living organisms. Cellulose acetate degradation depends strongly on acetylation and environmental conditions.
Acetylation: Acetylation is a chemical reaction that introduces acetyl groups into a molecule. It replaces cellulose hydroxyl groups with acetate ester groups.
Cigarette filter: A cigarette filter is a porous component intended to retain some particles from smoke passing through it. Many cigarette filters use bundles of cellulose acetate fibers.
Celluloid: Celluloid is an early plastic made chiefly from cellulose nitrate and camphor. Its flammability motivated the search for safer cellulose-based film materials.
Microplastics: Microplastics are small plastic particles found in the environment, commonly defined as smaller than five millimeters. Discarded acetate fibers and filters can contribute persistent small particles.
Degree of substitution: Degree of substitution is the average number of substituent groups attached per repeating unit in a polymer. It determines how many cellulose hydroxyl groups have been acetylated.
Photographic film: Photographic film is a flexible support coated with light-sensitive material for recording images. Cellulose acetate replaced flammable cellulose nitrate as a film base.
