Center-pivot irrigation

Center-pivot irrigation is a mechanized system in which a wheeled pipeline rotates around a fixed water supply, applying water to crops in a circular field.

Center-pivot system: A rotating irrigation machine built around a fixed pivot, a long pipe, and wheeled support towers. Its pivot, pipe, and towers form the machine that moves across the field.
Irrigated agriculture: Crop production in which water is deliberately supplied to land through irrigation. Center-pivot systems are a major way to supply water to large agricultural fields.
Frank Zybach: An American farmer and inventor who developed and patented the center-pivot irrigation system. His invention established the rotating sprinkler machine used in modern center-pivot irrigation.
Ogallala Aquifer depletion: The long-term decline in groundwater stored in the Ogallala Aquifer due to withdrawals exceeding recharge. Heavy pumping for center-pivot irrigation has depleted parts of this aquifer.
