Central Asian Orogenic Belt

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt is a vast assemblage of accreted terranes, island arcs, and magmatic rocks across Central and Northeast Asia, formed mainly during the Paleozoic between major cratons.

Terrane accretion: The tectonic process by which crustal fragments attach to a continent or another terrane. Successive terrane additions built much of the belt during Paleozoic ocean closure.
Continental crust: The relatively thick, buoyant outer layer of Earth that forms continents. The belt is a long-lived addition to continental crust between older cratons.
Paleozoic: The geological era from about 539 to 252 million years ago. Most major accretionary and magmatic growth of the belt occurred during this era.
Continental growth: The increase of continental crust through processes such as magmatism, accretion, and remelting. The belt is a major natural record of continental growth by accretion.
Paleomagnetism: The study of ancient magnetic records preserved in rocks to reconstruct past plate positions. Paleomagnetic data test where terranes lay before their accretion to Asia.
Subduction: The descent of one tectonic plate beneath another into the mantle. Subduction generated magmatic arcs and helped consume oceans within the belt.
Craton: An ancient, stable region of continental lithosphere that has resisted major deformation. The Siberian, Tarim, and North China cratons bound major parts of the belt.
Paleo-Asian Ocean: A Paleozoic ocean that separated continental blocks across much of Central Asia. Its progressive closure drove much of the belt’s assembly.
Isotope geochemistry: The study of isotope abundances to investigate geological materials and processes. Isotopic signatures help distinguish juvenile additions from reworked older crust.
Detrital zircon: A zircon grain eroded from its source rock and preserved in sediment. Its age and chemistry can reveal otherwise hidden sources and crustal histories.
