Central China

Central China is a region centered on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, commonly comprising Henan, Hubei, and Hunan provinces.

Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea. Its middle reaches form the region’s central geographic axis.
Wuhan: The capital of Hubei province and a major city at the confluence of the Yangtze and Han rivers. Its river and rail connections make it a major regional transport hub.
North China: A broad region of China centered on the North China Plain and areas to its north. Its drier climate and northern cultural patterns contrast with much of Central China.
Battle of Red Cliffs: A major naval battle fought in 208 or 209 CE between forces of Cao Cao and the allied warlords Sun Quan and Liu Bei. Fought along the Yangtze in present-day Hubei, it helped prevent northern control of the south.
Henan: A province in north-central China, with its capital at Zhengzhou. Henan is the northern province in the region’s commonly used three-province grouping.
Zhengzhou: The capital of Henan province and a major transport and logistics center. Its position links Central China with northern and western parts of the country.
South China: A broad region of China encompassing its southern provinces and coastal areas. It lies farther south and is often distinguished from the middle-Yangtze provinces.
Three Kingdoms: The period from 220 to 280 CE when Wei, Shu, and Wu divided control of China. The middle Yangtze became a strategic frontier among rival states during this era.
Hubei: A province in central China, with its capital at Wuhan. Hubei occupies the middle Yangtze corridor at the heart of the region.
Changsha: The capital of Hunan province and a major city on the Xiang River. It is a leading center of commerce and manufacturing in the southern part of the region.
