Central place theory

Central place theory explains the size, number, and spacing of settlements by their roles as centers supplying goods and services to surrounding areas.

Threshold population: The minimum number of customers needed to support a good or service. A central place offers a service only when its surrounding population reaches this minimum.
Walter Christaller: A German geographer who formulated central place theory in 1933. His study of southern Germany supplied the theory’s original settlement pattern.
Retail geography: The study of where retail activities locate and how they serve consumers across space. Central place theory helps explain the distribution and service areas of retail centers.
Zipf's law for cities: An empirical regularity in which a city’s population tends to be inversely proportional to its rank. It describes city-size distributions rather than deriving settlement spacing from service thresholds.
Regional science: An interdisciplinary field that studies the location and spatial organization of economic and social activity. Central place theory helped establish formal spatial modeling as a regional-science approach.
Range of a good: The maximum distance consumers will travel to obtain a good or service. Different travel limits produce service areas of different sizes around settlements.

Service area: The geographic area served by a facility, organization, or service provider. The theory models each center’s reach as an area shaped by customer demand and travel.
Rank-size rule: A pattern in which the population of each city is roughly the largest city’s population divided by its rank. This empirical rule concerns relative city sizes, not central-place service areas.
Urban system: A network of cities and towns linked by flows and organized through their roles and relative sizes. The theory offers a model for understanding how settlements divide regional service functions.
