Knowra Central Treaty Organization Central Treaty Organization The Central Treaty Organization (CENTO) was a Cold War alliance formed by Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Founded as the Baghdad Pact in 1955, it ended in 1979 after Iran withdrew.
Baghdad Pact : A 1955 mutual-security pact among Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, and the United Kingdom, later renamed CENTO. CENTO began under this name before Iraq’s 1959 withdrawal prompted its reorganization.
Mutual defense pact : An agreement in which states promise assistance if a member is attacked. CENTO’s treaty framework centered on mutual assistance against aggression.
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi : The shah of Iran from 1941 until his overthrow in 1979. His government made Iran a central CENTO member until the Iranian Revolution.
Kurdish–Iraqi conflict : A series of conflicts between Iraqi governments and Kurdish movements seeking autonomy or independence. CENTO did not provide a collective response to internal conflicts such as Iraq’s Kurdish insurgencies.
NATO : A military alliance founded in 1949 by North American and European states for collective defense. Its alliance model and Western backing informed the Baghdad Pact’s strategic design.
Collective security : A system in which states cooperate to deter or respond to aggression against any member. CENTO invoked collective security, though its members lacked a unified command structure.
Adnan Menderes : Turkey’s prime minister from 1950 to 1960, who pursued close ties with Western powers. His government helped establish Turkey’s leading role in the Baghdad Pact.
Iran–Iraq relations : The political and strategic relationship between Iran and Iraq, marked by rivalry, conflict, and periods of cooperation. Their rivalry limited the cohesion expected of two neighboring CENTO members.
Southeast Asia Treaty Organization : A Cold War alliance formed in 1954 to contain communist expansion in Southeast Asia. SEATO was another US-backed regional pact in the containment strategy CENTO joined.
Military alliance : A formal agreement among states to cooperate on defense or military action. CENTO belonged to this broader family of security arrangements.
