Centre-Val de Loire

An administrative region in central France comprising six departments, including much of the Loire Valley. It was named Centre until 2015.

Loiret: A department in north-central France, with Orléans as its capital. Orléans is the regional capital and Loiret lies in the region’s northeast.
Loire Valley: A geographic and cultural region along the Loire River in central and western France. Its landscapes and heritage define much of the region’s international image.
French regions: Territorial authorities that organize regional administration in France. Centre-Val de Loire is one of metropolitan France’s administrative regions.
Pays de la Loire: An administrative region in western France, extending from the Loire estuary inland. Its name also invokes the Loire, but it lies west of Centre-Val de Loire.
Loir-et-Cher: A department in central France, with Blois as its capital. Blois anchors this department in the region’s Loire Valley.
Château de Chambord: A Renaissance château in the Loire Valley, built under Francis I in the sixteenth century. It is one of the region’s best-known heritage sites.
French regional reform of 2014: A law that reduced the number of metropolitan French regions from 22 to 13 in 2016. The reform established the current regional map while this region retained its boundaries.
Bourgogne-Franche-Comté: An administrative region in eastern France, formed from Burgundy and Franche-Comté. It borders Centre-Val de Loire to the east.
Indre-et-Loire: A department in western central France, with Tours as its capital. Tours is the region’s largest city and the department’s capital.
Château de Chenonceau: A Renaissance château in Indre-et-Loire, spanning the River Cher. Its location and architecture make it a major Loire Valley destination.
