Centrifugal force

Centrifugal force is an apparent force directed outward from an axis of rotation in a rotating reference frame. Its magnitude is mass times angular speed squared times distance from the axis.

Centripetal force: The net inward force that keeps an object moving along a curved path. In an inertial frame, this inward force replaces the outward centrifugal force used in a rotating frame.
Newton's laws of motion: Three laws relating motion, forces, and inertia in classical mechanics. Centrifugal force is added to Newton's second law when applying it in a rotating frame.
Centrifuge: A device that separates materials by spinning them at high speed. Its rotating frame describes samples as subject to a strong outward centrifugal force.
Gravity: The attractive interaction between bodies with mass and the associated curvature of spacetime. Centrifugal force can mimic gravity in a rotating habitat, but it is frame-dependent rather than gravitational.
Coriolis force: An apparent force in a rotating frame that deflects moving objects sideways relative to that frame. It is the other major apparent force arising from rotation, acting on motion rather than position alone.
Non-inertial reference frame: A reference frame that accelerates or rotates relative to an inertial frame. Centrifugal force is one of the apparent forces needed to describe motion in such a frame.
Centrifugal pump: A pump that uses a rotating impeller to move fluid outward and raise its pressure. Its name and operation draw on outward motion imparted by a rotating impeller.
Centripetal acceleration: The inward acceleration of an object following a curved path. It is a real kinematic feature of circular motion, unlike the outward apparent force in a rotating frame.
Angular velocity: A vector describing an object's rate and axis of rotation. Its squared magnitude sets the centrifugal force per unit mass and distance.
Uniform circular motion: Motion along a circular path at constant speed. The inward acceleration of circular motion corresponds to an outward apparent force in the co-rotating frame.
