Centrosome

The centrosome is a microtubule-organizing center in animal cells, usually containing two centrioles and surrounding pericentriolar material. It helps organize the mitotic spindle that separates chromosomes during cell division.

Pericentriolar material: Protein-rich material surrounding centrioles that recruits proteins involved in microtubule nucleation and organization. It supplies much of the centrosome’s microtubule-organizing activity.
Cell cycle: The ordered series of growth, DNA replication, and division stages through which a cell passes. Centrosome duplication is coordinated with progression through these stages.
Centrosome amplification: A cellular state in which a cell contains more centrosomes than the usual complement. Extra centrosomes can disrupt spindle organization and promote chromosome missegregation.
Theodor Boveri: A German biologist whose work established key principles of chromosome behavior and centrosome function. His experiments linked centrosomes and orderly chromosome distribution in cell division.
Plant cell: A eukaryotic cell with features such as a cell wall, chloroplasts in photosynthetic tissues, and a large central vacuole. Most higher plant cells lack centrosomes yet still organize mitotic spindles.
Centriole: A cylindrical structure built from microtubule triplets that helps organize centrosomes and forms the base of cilia. A typical animal centrosome contains a pair of these structures.
Microtubule-organizing center: A cellular site that nucleates or anchors microtubules and organizes their arrangement. The centrosome is the principal example in many animal cells.
Ciliogenesis: The process by which a cell assembles a cilium from a basal body and associated components. A mother centriole can become the basal body that nucleates a cilium.
Edouard van Beneden: A Belgian cytologist who studied fertilization and chromosome behavior in animal cells. His observations helped establish the centrosome as a distinct cellular structure.
Basal body: A centriole-derived structure that anchors and organizes the base of a cilium or flagellum. It resembles a centriole but organizes a cilium rather than a mitotic spindle.
