Cervical collar

A brace worn around the neck to support the cervical spine and restrict movement. It is used in some injuries and after certain procedures, though prolonged immobilization can cause harm.

Cervical spine injury: Damage to the bones, joints, ligaments, or spinal cord in the neck. Collars are used when a neck injury may make movement unsafe.
Cervical spine: The seven vertebrae and associated structures forming the neck portion of the spine. The collar surrounds and aims to limit movement of this spinal region.
Pressure ulcer: Localized damage to skin and underlying tissue caused by sustained pressure or shear. Prolonged collar contact can injure skin, especially over bony areas.
Halo vest: A rigid spinal orthosis that anchors a ring to the skull and connects it to a torso vest. It provides stronger immobilization than a neck collar for selected injuries.
Spinal immobilization: Limiting movement of the spine to reduce the risk of worsening an injury. A collar is one tool used to restrict cervical movement during suspected injury.
Soft cervical collar: A flexible foam or fabric neck support that provides warmth and a reminder to limit movement. Its flexibility offers less mechanical restriction than rigid collars.
Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing food, liquid, or saliva. A tightly fitted or prolonged collar can make swallowing harder.
Cervical fusion: Surgery that joins cervical vertebrae to reduce movement between them. Fusion stabilizes the spine internally rather than relying on an external collar.
Prehospital care: Medical assessment and treatment provided before a patient reaches a hospital. Emergency teams may apply a collar while evaluating possible neck trauma.
Rigid cervical collar: A firm neck brace designed to restrict cervical movement more than a soft collar. Its shells and straps provide the main structural restraint used in acute care.
