César Franck

César Franck (1822–1890) was a Belgian-born French composer, organist, and teacher whose chromatic harmony, cyclic forms, and organ works helped shape French Romantic music.

Cyclic form: A musical structure in which themes recur across multiple movements to unify a larger work. Franck made recurring themes a defining source of unity in several major compositions.
Symphony in D minor (Franck): César Franck’s only symphony, completed in 1888 and structured as three connected movements. Its recurring themes and unusual three-movement plan became his best-known orchestral statement.
Vincent d’Indy: A French composer and teacher who studied with Franck and later promoted his music and methods. D’Indy became Franck’s most influential advocate and shaped the memory of his teaching.
Liège: A city in eastern Belgium, historically a center of music and instrument making. Franck was born in Liège in 1822 and began his musical training there.
