Cetyl alcohol

Cetyl alcohol, or 1-hexadecanol, is a saturated fatty alcohol with a 16-carbon chain and a terminal hydroxyl group. It is used as an emollient, thickener, and stabilizer in personal-care and pharmaceutical products.

Emollient: An ingredient that softens and smooths skin by supporting its surface lipid layer. Cetyl alcohol softens skin and reduces moisture loss in creams and lotions.
Amphiphile: A molecule with distinct regions that interact favorably with both water and oil-like substances. Cetyl alcohol’s hydroxyl head and hydrocarbon chain give it limited amphiphilic character.
Alcohol: An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group attached to a saturated carbon atom. Cetyl alcohol is a long-chain member of this chemical family.
Cetostearyl alcohol: A mixture composed mainly of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, used as a thickener and emollient. Unlike pure cetyl alcohol, this common cosmetic ingredient is a blend of two chain lengths.
Emulsion: A mixture in which droplets of one liquid are dispersed through another immiscible liquid. Cetyl alcohol helps stabilize oil-and-water mixtures in creams.
Hydrogen bond: An attractive interaction involving a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom and another electronegative atom. Its hydroxyl group can form hydrogen bonds with water and other formulation ingredients.
Hexadecanol: An alcohol whose molecule contains a 16-carbon saturated chain and one hydroxyl group. This systematic name describes cetyl alcohol’s molecular structure.
Cetyl alcohol allergy: A rare allergic contact dermatitis reaction to cetyl alcohol or related fatty alcohols. It distinguishes uncommon allergic reactions from the irritation often attributed broadly to alcohols.
Cold cream: A water-in-oil skin cream traditionally made with oils, waxes, and water. Cetyl alcohol can thicken and stabilize this traditional type of cream.
Hydrophobic effect: The tendency of nonpolar substances to associate in water, reducing their contact with it. The long nonpolar chain avoids water and helps cetyl alcohol associate with oils.
