Chaco War

The Chaco War was a 1932–1935 conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay over the Gran Chaco, a sparsely populated region between them. Paraguay won, and the 1938 peace treaty awarded it most of the disputed territory.

Gran Chaco: A lowland region of scrub forest, wetlands, and dry plains in central South America. The contested territory’s heat, sparse water, and difficult terrain shaped military operations.
Gran Chaco boundary dispute: A long-running territorial disagreement over the borders and ownership of the Gran Chaco. Its unresolved claims provided the political setting for armed conflict.
Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Boundaries of 1938: The 1938 treaty that formally ended the Chaco dispute and established the Bolivia–Paraguay boundary. It confirmed Paraguay’s control of most of the disputed territory while granting Bolivia limited access to the Paraguay River.

Cenepa War: A 1995 armed conflict between Ecuador and Peru over a disputed border region in the Cordillera del Cóndor. It was another South American border war, but fought in a different landscape and era.
Battle of Campo Vía: A 1933 battle in which Paraguayan forces encircled and captured a large Bolivian force. The encirclement exposed Bolivia’s logistical and command weaknesses.
Discovery of oil in Bolivia: The development of petroleum exploration and production in Bolivia during the early twentieth century. Oil speculation heightened foreign interest in the Chaco, though its role in causing the war is often overstated.
