Chadian–Libyan War

A series of armed conflicts between Chad and Libya from 1978 to 1987, centered on Libya’s intervention in northern Chad and ending with Chad’s victory in the Toyota War.

Toyota War: The 1987 campaign in which Chadian forces, using mobile vehicles and anti-tank weapons, drove Libyan troops from northern Chad. Its decisive Chadian victories brought the wider war to an end.
Franco-Libyan dispute over the Aouzou Strip: A colonial-era boundary dispute over whether the Aouzou Strip belonged to French-controlled Chad or Italy-controlled Libya. Its unresolved border question later became the central territorial issue in the war.
Muammar Gaddafi: Libya’s ruler from 1969 until 2011, who sought influence in Chad and claimed the Aouzou Strip. His government supplied troops and support to Chadian allies throughout the conflict.
International Court of Justice: The principal judicial organ of the United Nations, which settles legal disputes between states. It ruled in 1994 that the Aouzou Strip belonged to Chad.
FROLINAT: The National Liberation Front of Chad, a coalition of insurgent groups that fought successive Chadian governments. Libya supported factions within this insurgency to extend its influence in Chad.
Treaty of 1935: A proposed agreement between France and Italy that would have transferred the Aouzou Strip to Italian Libya but was never ratified. Libya later invoked this agreement to support its claim to the strip.
Idriss Déby: Chadian military officer who helped overthrow Hissène Habré in 1990 and later became president. He served in Habré’s forces during the later phase of the war.
Aouzou Strip handover: Libya’s 1994 withdrawal from the Aouzou Strip following the International Court of Justice ruling. The handover completed Chad’s recovery of territory claimed and occupied during the war.
Aouzou Strip: A sparsely populated region in northern Chad claimed and occupied by Libya from 1973 until 1994. The territorial dispute gave the intervention a lasting strategic focus.
Chadian Civil War: A prolonged struggle among Chadian factions and governments that began after independence in 1965. Domestic conflict created openings for Libyan intervention and shifting alliances.
