Chaebol

A chaebol is a South Korean business group whose affiliated companies are controlled by a founding family, often through cross-shareholdings and family-appointed leadership.

Cross-shareholding: A corporate ownership arrangement in which companies hold shares in one another. Mutual stakes can preserve family influence across affiliated companies despite limited direct ownership.
Park Chung Hee: South Korean president from 1963 to 1979, whose government pursued state-led industrialization. His government directed credit and incentives toward selected private business groups.
Lee Byung-chul: South Korean entrepreneur who founded Samsung and built it into a major business group. His family founded the chaebol that became South Korea’s largest corporate group.
Samsung Electronics: A South Korean electronics company known for semiconductors, smartphones, and consumer devices. It is the best-known operating company within the Samsung business group.
1997 Asian financial crisis: A regional financial crisis that began in Thailand in 1997 and spread across East Asia. South Korea’s crisis exposed chaebol debt and prompted major corporate and financial reforms.
Circular ownership: A shareholding structure in which a chain of companies eventually owns shares in the first company. Circular stakes have helped some chaebol families maintain control across group affiliates.
South Korean economic miracle: South Korea’s rapid industrialization and economic growth from the 1960s through the late twentieth century. Chaebol expansion was central to the export-led growth that transformed the economy.
Chung Ju-yung: South Korean entrepreneur who founded Hyundai and expanded it into a major industrial group. His company-building helped establish Hyundai as a leading chaebol.
Hyundai Motor Company: A South Korean automobile manufacturer headquartered in Seoul. It anchors the automotive business associated with Hyundai’s wider group.
