Chain drive

A chain drive transmits rotary motion and power between shafts by engaging a chain with toothed wheels called sprockets. Unlike a belt drive, it relies on positive engagement rather than friction.

Roller chain: A chain made of alternating inner and outer links joined by pins, with rollers that engage sprocket teeth. Its rollers seat between the teeth and carry the load in a common chain drive.
Mechanical power transmission: The transfer of mechanical energy between components through forces and motion. A chain drive is one method within this broader family of machine systems.
Bicycle drivetrain: The bicycle components that transfer a rider’s pedal power to the driven wheel. A bicycle uses a chain and selectable sprockets to propel the rear wheel.
Belt drive: A power-transmission system that transfers motion between pulleys using a flexible belt. Belts can run more quietly, while chains provide positive engagement and resist slip.
Sprocket: A toothed wheel whose teeth engage a chain, track, or other perforated material. The sprockets engage the chain and set the shafts’ speed relationship.
Rotational motion: Motion in which an object turns around an axis. The drive transfers rotation from one shaft to another.
Motorcycle chain drive: A motorcycle final-drive system that transfers engine power to the rear wheel through a chain and sprockets. It applies chain transmission to a high-load, exposed vehicle drive.
Gear train: An arrangement of meshing gears that transmits motion and torque between shafts. Gears provide compact, precise transmission but require closer shaft alignment and a housing.
Chain tensioner: A component that maintains or adjusts tension in a chain drive. It controls slack that can cause noise, tooth skipping, or chain derailment.
Torque: The turning effect of a force about an axis. The chain’s tensile force acting at a sprocket radius transmits torque.
