Chain (physical links)

A chain is a series of connected links, usually metal, used to fasten, pull, support, restrain, or transmit motion.

Chain link: A closed or open component joined to other components to form a chain. Each link transfers force to its neighbors while allowing the chain to bend.
Bicycle chain: A roller chain that transfers power from a bicycle's crankset to its rear wheel. Its pins, rollers, and plates make the general chain form a compact drivetrain.
Rope: A thick cord formed by twisting or braiding fibers or strands. Rope is lighter and often more flexible, while chains resist cutting and abrasion differently.
Steel: An iron-based alloy containing carbon and often other elements. Many load-bearing chains use steel for its strength and manufacturability.
Iron Age: A period in which iron became a major material for tools and weapons. Ironworking made durable metal links practical across many societies.
Tensile strength: The maximum tensile stress a material can withstand before breaking. A chain's load limit depends on its links resisting tension without fracture.
Anchor chain: A heavy chain connecting a vessel to its anchor. Its mass and strength help secure vessels and absorb movement under changing loads.
Cable: A strong assembly of twisted wires or fibers used to carry loads or signals. Wire rope can carry tensile loads with less weight than a comparable metal chain.
Stainless steel: A corrosion-resistant steel alloy containing at least about 10.5 percent chromium. Stainless-steel chains resist rust in wet or chemically aggressive environments.
Blacksmithing: The craft of shaping iron and steel by heating and hammering. Forging linked metal components was a traditional way to make durable chains.
