Chainsaw

A portable power saw that cuts with a motor-driven chain of sharp teeth moving around a guide bar. It is used chiefly for felling trees, limbing, and cutting wood.

Saw chain: A loop of linked metal cutters driven around a chainsaw’s guide bar. Its cutters remove wood as the chain travels around the bar.
Tree felling: The controlled cutting of a standing tree so it falls in a chosen direction. Chainsaws make the directional cuts used to fell many trees.
Osteotome: A surgical instrument used to cut or divide bone. Early chain-based bone cutters belonged to this medical tool family.
Electric chainsaw: A chainsaw powered by an electric motor, from a cord or rechargeable battery. It trades fuel independence for quieter operation and reduced exhaust.
Guide bar: The elongated metal plate that supports and guides a chainsaw’s moving chain. Its length and shape determine the chain’s cutting path.
Limbing: The removal of branches from a felled or standing tree. It is a common chainsaw task after felling.
Bernhard Heine: A German physician and instrument maker who developed the chain osteotome in the nineteenth century. His medical device established an early form of a cutting chain.
Pole saw: A saw mounted on an extended pole for cutting elevated branches. It reaches overhead limbs without the same close-range handling as a chainsaw.
Centrifugal clutch: A clutch that engages a rotating shaft when its speed exceeds a threshold. It lets the engine idle without driving the chain.
Bucking: The cutting of a felled tree trunk into shorter sections. Chainsaws commonly divide logs into manageable lengths.
