Chalukya dynasty

The Chalukya dynasty was a Deccan ruling house whose early branch rose to power in the sixth century CE. Its later branches included the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi and the Western Chalukyas of Kalyani.

Pulakeshin I: A sixth-century ruler credited with establishing Chalukya power at Vatapi. His reign marks the rise of the early Chalukyas as a regional dynasty.
Pulakeshin II: A seventh-century Chalukya ruler who expanded his kingdom and resisted Harsha’s advance into the Deccan. His campaigns and diplomatic prestige define the dynasty’s strongest early phase.
Chalukya–Pallava conflicts: A series of wars between the Chalukyas and Pallavas for control of the Deccan and southern India. These wars repeatedly altered Chalukya territory and the fate of Vatapi.
Eastern Chalukyas: A Chalukya branch that ruled Vengi in the eastern Deccan from the seventh century onward. Pulakeshin II’s conquest of Vengi created a durable eastern branch.
Pallava dynasty: A South Indian ruling dynasty whose power was centered in the region around Kanchipuram. The Pallavas were the Chalukyas’ principal southern rivals during the early branch’s height.
Vatapi: The ancient name of Badami, a town in Karnataka that served as the early Chalukya capital. The dynasty made Vatapi its political center and fortified its sandstone landscape.
Mangalesha: A Chalukya ruler who governed in the early seventh century and fought for succession against his nephew Pulakeshin II. His conflict with Pulakeshin II exposed the risks of contested succession.
Aihole inscription: A Sanskrit inscription dated 634 CE that records Pulakeshin II’s genealogy and achievements. It presents royal victory as a source of Chalukya legitimacy.
Western Chalukyas of Kalyani: A later Chalukya dynasty that ruled from Kalyani in the western Deccan, chiefly between the tenth and twelfth centuries. This later house revived Chalukya kingship centuries after the Badami branch declined.
Rashtrakuta dynasty: A Deccan imperial dynasty that rose to power in the eighth century and displaced the Badami Chalukyas. The Rashtrakuta ascent ended the early Chalukya line’s rule at Vatapi.
